Impact Day: Latest

Today's operation across the North Wales Police force area has resulted in 84 people being arrested for a variety of offences.

Over 180 police officers were involved in the execution of warrants and searching of premises in a crack down on crime.

In the counties of Gwynedd and Anglesey the total number of arrests currently stands at 47, with 13 people remaining in custody.

Following the execution of a search warrant in one property in Merionnydd, numerous weapons, including large knives, and a quantity of what appears to be class A controlled drugs were seized. As a result a 24-year-old man from the Meirionnydd area was arrested for possession with intent to supply controlled drugs and other associated offences. He remains in police custody as enquiries continue.

Several other people remain in custody for possession of class A drugs, following the recovery of numerous cannabis plants and a hydroponics system.

In the Conwy and Denbighshire areas 22 arrests have been made for offences including possession of class A and B drugs, assault, burglary, race related offences and harassment.

In Wrexham and Flintshire 15 people were arrested and a large quantity of class A, B and C drugs were seized. A quantity of stolen goods were also recovered.

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Gareth Pritchard said: "North Wales Police is committed to reducing crime and protecting people and today's coordinated force wide strike against crime and offenders demonstrates this.

After the success of today's operation we will be putting the evidence we have collated before the Crown Prosecution Service. Across North Wales we have disrupted criminal activity and we are now seeking to put these offenders before the courts."

Double award truimph for Wrexham's animal welfare services

Wrexham Public Protection Department has received two awards in recognition of its innovative approach to Animal Welfare. The awards were presented to representatives of the service at the Delivering Pet Welfare in Wales conference in Cardiff on 11 November 2009.

The Minister for Rural Affairs Elin Jones A.M. presented the RSPCA Community Animal Welfare Gold Footprint Award to the authority's Dog Warden Service. The Gold Footprint Award is a prestigious accolade awarded by the animal charity RSPCA and recognises best practice in the Council's policies and procedures for dealing with stray dogs.

The award is only given to Local Authorities which can clearly demonstrate that they operate a first rate stray collection service which focuses on the animals' welfare. The Gold Award reflects the fact that Wrexham Councils Dog Warden Service ensures that the public have access to advice on responsible ownership and schemes which promote the benefits of neutering and micro-chipping.

The minister also presented the Animal Health and Welfare Team with an award for reaching the final in the RSPCA Innovator in Animal Welfare category. This award aims to celebrate local authorities and other organisations that have tried something different or innovative when tackling an issue relating to Animal Welfare.

The Team works with partners to develop innovative ways of providing education with regard to animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. This includes visits to schools, providing information and guidance, working within Community First groups and arranging micro-chipping events.

Andy Lewis, Chief Housing and Public Protection Officer said:

"These awards are in recognition of the hard work that these officers within the Public Protection Department have put in to ensure that standards of Animal Health and Welfare within the County Borough are improved. I congratulate the officers involved for their endeavours and the recognition they have rightly received."

School Children Encounter a Sticky Problem

Children from a local school have been shown just how hard it is to remove chewing gum from the streets of Wrexham.

Staff at Wrexham Council's Streetscene demonstrated to pupils from Victoria Junior School the problems posed by discarded chewing gum on Town Hill. Staff used high pressure water hoses to remove the chewing gum and gave a talk to pupils highlighting the effort and cost of removing chewing gum.

Removing chewing gum from pavements and streets is an expensive and time consuming. According to the Community Clean group, while each stick of gum costs only 3p to buy, it costs 10p to prise off the streets. In 2007, the Government said the average cost to clean up gum from a town centre would be £20,000.

Cllr David Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport said:

"Removing discarded chewing is not only an expensive process, but also a drain on council resources. After this demonstration, hopefully the children will think twice about throwing their chewing gum on the floor."

Quad bike recovered in Wrexham

North Wales Police are trying to trace the owner of a quad bike which has been found in the Wrexham area.

The yellow coloured Hummer quad bike was found on Monday 9th November and attempts to trace the owner have so far failed.

Officers are hoping that by releasing this photograph, someone may recognise the bike and provide proof of ownership.

Body found in Sontley Hill, Wrexham

At approximately 10am this morning (Sunday, 15th November) a body of a man was discovered in a park in the Sontley Hill area of Wrexham.

The body was found by a member of the public.

Officers attended and police can confirm that the death is not being treated as suspicious.

The body is believed to be that of a man who was in his 40’s who came from the Liverpool area.

End of an era for the Mobile Library

For several decades, library books were checked out using the manual ticket system. Did you know that until this week that was still the process on Wrexham’s Mobile Library?

However, this service has now been made one of the most modern services in Wales. Satellite technology has been installed on Wrexham Council’s Mobile Library, meaning it can connect to the Internet and to the Council’s computer network enabling people to check all the books on the library catalogue and make reservations for items from other libraries. This end of an era will bring a multitude of instant on-line benefits enabling the library staff to deal with enquiries for information instantaneously.

The Mobile Library provides a service to areas of the County Borough where there is no static library building. It therefore serves rural areas, small villages and outlying urban areas. The mobile library is very heavily-used and is one of the busiest libraries in the County Borough, with over 60,000 books and audio items borrowed each year.

Councillor Bob Dutton, Deputy Leader of Wrexham Council and the Lead Member for Library Services commented:

"This technology will make the mobile library that visits areas of the County Borough one of the most modern in Wales. The mobile library reflects the Council’s wish to ensure that all residents are able to access a comprehensive library service, regardless of where they live. It is also part of the ongoing modernisation of the library service in Wrexham, which has developed an enviable reputation for innovation and improving local community provision. The Authority is committed to providing the best possible services to residents in all parts of the County Borough and the Mobile Satellite service means that residents will also be assisted to understand and use the Internet services provided in the van."

Cllr Barbara Roberts, Local Member for the Ceiriog Valley, where the mobile library makes some of its stops, said:

"The mobile library is used by many of the residents in the Ceiriog Valley and is a lifeline to many of the older residents, as well as being a welcome service for families and young people. The modernisation of this service is great news for the local community, giving them the chance to reserve books in an instant and see what is available at other libraries in Wrexham. It means a far quicker and more complete service for the mobile library users."

The AvL antenna system was provided by SISlink, Europe’s largest mobile satellite service, which has provided satellite connectivity for many other applications in the UK including emergency and health services. The installation was completed by Bailey’s Bodybuilders of Stoke-on-Trent. The antenna is very robust having been used by the US Army in Iraq and also tested in wet hurricane and extreme cold conditions. Connection to the Library Management System and the library catalogue is provided by Axiell through its Galaxy software.

Parents prosecuted for failing to send children to school

Parents of a local school pupil have been fined and given community orders for not sending their children to school on a regular basis.

Wrexham Council’s Education Social Work Service in conjunction with the authority’s legal department has successfully completed its first prosecution under a section of the education act that could potentially carry a custodial sentence.

The parents were both given a 12 month community order and ordered to pay costs of £120 for failing to send their children to school on a regular basis.

Parents who don’t send their children to school now face stiffer penalties under the education act, including possibility of going to prison.

Wrexham Council has been clamping down on truancy in its schools, with school attendance having seen a significant improvement in recent years. According to figures recently released by the Welsh Assembly Government, Wrexham has the best primary school attendance in Wales, as well as the second best secondary school attendance.

Cllr Arfon Jones, Lead Member for Children (Additional Learning, Families and Support) said:

"Anyone who does not send their child to school should be aware they face severe punishment, including a possible sentence. The authority works very hard to improve school attendance and it is important that both children and parents understand the importance of going to school."

Warrant executed in Cefn Mawr, Wrexham

A man was arrested on Friday 13th November after a warrant was executed at an address in Cefn Mawr, Wrexham.

As a result of the warrant which took place at an address on Coronation Street, police seized a large quantity of what is believed to be Class A drugs.

An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply and has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Get the jab reminds Wrexham Am

Wrexham's AM, Lesley Griffiths, has today urged priority groups in the town to get vaccinated against swine flu.

Pregnant women, people with chronic conditions and those in contact with people with weakened immune systems are currently being invited by their GP practices to be vaccinated.

They are being seen first because they are most at risk from swine flu and its complications. Frontline health and social care workers are also being vaccinated.

Commenting, Lesley Griffiths AM said:

"I would urge all those eligible for the vaccine to take up the option as soon as possible.

"The vaccine has been tested and approved and is the best way to protect people from the virus.

"I would like to see a 100% take-up of the vaccine to protect communities in Wrexham and across Wales.

"For those not yet entitled to the vaccine the advice is to stay at home if you have flu-like symptoms.

"You can check the symptoms by calling the swine flu information line on 0800 1 513 513."

The Commonwealth Baton comes to Wrexham

The Queen’s Baton Relay is coming to Wrexham. The first stop of the Baton’s journey through Wales on route to the 2010 Commonwealth games in Delhi.

The baton is being received in Wrexham by the Mayor, Cllr Arwel Gwynn Jones on Monday 9th November at 8.50am and will be carried through Wrexham to Llwyn Isaf at the Guildhall by international sporting athletes’ including Wrexham's Olympic Rowing Gold Medal Winner Tom James.

The athletes who will be joining Tom, and supported by local high school children, are Wrexham Manager Dean Saunders, swimmer and Commonwealth Welsh record holder Lowri Tynan, Paralympics Dressage Rider and 2012 Olympic hopeful Natalie Povey, Wales' number one ranked Boccia player Gareth Stafford and Commonwealth Foil, Fencer Caroline Benson.

The Queen’s Baton Relay symbolises the unity and sheared ideals of the Commonwealth nations and enables communities beyond the Host City to share in the Games celebrations.

The Baton Relay 2010 Delhi began from Buckingham Palace on 29th October 2009 when the Queen formally handed over the baton. It will make its historic journey through all other 70 Commonwealth nations, a historic journey that will cover a distance of more than 190,000 kilometres in 340 days.

The relay will conclude after the final Baton bearer enters the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium during the Opening Ceremony of the XIX Commonwealth Games on 3rd October 2010 where Her Majesty The Queen's message will be removed from the baton and read aloud, officially opening the Games.

TV character kicks-off countdown to Christmas

Children’s TV favourite Fireman Sam will kick-off the countdown to Christmas by switching on Wrexham’s town centre lights this year.

One of the BBC’s best known children’s characters, Fireman Sam will be hot-tailing it to Wrexham for the Christmas lights switch-on Thursday, November 19 in Queen’s Square.

The free event always proves a big hit and thousands of people are expected to turn out for the fun.

Once Fireman Sam has flicked the switch, the evening will be capped off with a spectacular fireworks display.

The event is organised by Wrexham Council’s Economic Development Department.

Councillor Rodney Skelland, the council’s lead member for regeneration and corporate governance, said: “The Christmas lights switch-on is tremendous fun and always draws in the crowds.

“This year looks no different and I’m sure families in particular will love the Fireman Sam show, before we cap the evening off with a superb fireworks display.”

The fun starts at 5.30pm, with local radio station Calon FM warming the crowds up before singing and dancing act Musical Memories takes to the stage at 5.45pm.

Then the Mayor of Wrexham, Councillor Arwel Gwynn Jones, will introduce the winning act from the Wrexham’s Got Talent contest run by local café bar Chicago Rock.

Next up will be the star of the show Fireman Sam, with his sidekick Naughty Norman! The pair will put on a side-splitting performance called Extra, Extra, Read All About It, where Sam tries to teach his naughty friend a thing or two about telling the truth.

Robbery at Launderette in Johnstown

Police are appealing for witnesses and information following a robbery at a launderette in Johnstown yesterday evening (Tuesday 3 November).

At approx. 6:30pm a robbery occurred at the launderette on Maelor Road whereby two men – one of them armed with a large knife, entered the premises and stole a cashbox.

The men were both wearing hi-visibility jackets and had their faces covered with what was believed to be balaclavas.

They ran out of the premises towards the general direction of the Bromfield Road area of Johnstown.

Nobody was injured during the incident.

The box that was stolen contained a small amount of cash.

No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.

House to house enquiries have been carried out in the area and police are appealing to anybody who may have witnessed suspicious behaviour in the area of Maelor Road to contact officers at Wrexham CID on 101, or 0845 607 1001 (Welsh line), 0845 607 1002 (English line) or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Armistice Day two minute silence in Wrexham town centre

The Royal British Legion have once again organised a Two Minute Silence in Wrexham to mark Armistice Day. It will take place on Wednesday, 11 November 2009, outside the Old Library in Queen's Square in Wrexham town centre.

At 11.00 a.m, the County Borough Museum's Wartime Air Raid Siren will sound in the town centre, a bugler will sound the "Last Post" and the Two Minute Silence will be led by the Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr Arwel Jones. Members of the public are welcome to observe the silence.

A bugler will then play “Reveille”, following the conclusion of the two minute silence.

Social networking bilingually

Welsh speakers in Wrexham can now follow tweets bilingually after Wrexham Council launched Twitter pages in both English and Welsh.

The pages offer residents the opportunity to keep up to date with information including the latest job vacancies and news. Residents can also keep an eye on food hygiene inspections by being informed about the latest scores.

They have also launched bilingual Council Facebook pages alongside their latest campaign for this year's Christmas events giving everyone a chance to see what’s on in the lead up to Christmas.

The council also has a presence on Flickr, and is encouraging everyone to post their snaps of Wrexham County Borough.

There's already quite a selection of photographs of local scenes and officers have been so impressed they are considering using the site to choose a photo for either the Council's Christmas card or even the front page of the residents magazine Connect.

The council started using social networking sites in July when it promoted its summer events on Facebook. The page proved popular and it was decided to increase the information available and, of course, give Welsh speakers the opportunity to access the information in Welsh in line with the Council's Welsh Language Policy.

"Wrexham Council is committed to promoting the Welsh language and to improving access to its services. We have to look at all possible means of communicating and use all avenues available to us. "ProAct scheme has helped save over 170 local jobs": says Wrexham's AM

More than 170 workers in the Wrexham area have taken advantage of an Assembly Government-funded training scheme during the recession, Wrexham's Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths can reveal.

Latest figures obtained by Lesley show that in total, 172 workers locally have taken advantage of the ProAct scheme, since its inception.

ProAct, which was introduced by the Welsh Assembly Government, helps fund training during quiet time to up-skill staff in readiness for the upturn.

The scheme offers:

• Up to £2,000 per individual towards training costs
• A wage subsidy of up to £2,000 (at a rate of £50 a day) per individual whilst this training is being undertaken (up to 12 months.)

More than 7,000 workers across Wales have benefited from the ProAct scheme since the scheme was introduced.

Commenting on the local figures, Lesley Griffiths AM said:

“These figures show the success of the steps taken by the Welsh Assembly Government in actively helping those hit by the recession in Wrexham.

“I am proud that the Government is continuing to offer local people and companies via this scheme, by making sure people are not left feeling alienated and alone when hit by these hard times.

"Without the ProAct scheme in place, there is every likelihood that 172 in the Wrexham area would have lost their jobs. Such is the importance of this scheme to the local area.

“The Welsh Assembly Government is committed to the long-term goal of creating a full employment society in Wales, providing everyone with the opportunity to fulfil their potential through work, study and training.

Suspended sentences for counterfeit clothing sellers

Two Wolverhampton men have received suspended prison sentences for the sale and possession of counterfeit clothing at Chirk Car Boot Sale, Wrexham.

At Mold Crown Court on 12 October 2009 Mohammed Haq, 44, of Bruford Road, Wolverhampton and Adil Haq, 33, of Goldthorn Road, Wolverhampton were each sentenced to 20 weeks imprisonment, suspended for 2 years, and were ordered to carry out 100 hours unpaid community work. At an earlier hearing they had pleaded guilty to twenty three specimen charges brought by Wrexham County Borough Council under the Trade Marks Act 1994.

Trading Standards Officers made test purchases of counterfeit clothing from the defendants’ stall at Chirk Car Boot Sale in June 2008. The following week officers returned to their stall and seized over 600 items labelled with well known brand names such as Nike, Adidas, Henri Lloyd and Fred Perry. Over 500 of the seized items were found to be counterfeit. It is estimated that the value of the seized items was over £6,500. If the goods had been genuine their value would have been much higher.

As well as imposing the suspended sentences and community punishment on the defendants, the Court ordered that their finances should be investigated under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Cllr David Bithell, Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for the Environment and Transport said “Anyone dealing in counterfeit goods should be aware they face severe punishment and loss of assets if they are caught. Financial investigations go back six years and defendants may lose any of their assets including their home, car or cash acquired as the result of criminal activity. Tackling the sale of counterfeit goods is one of the priorities for the Council’s Trading Standards Officers. The Judge in this case commented that it was important that legitimate traders should be protected from people who deal in counterfeit goods”.

Rhos Youth Council visit Airbase

Children and Community Councillors from the Wrexham South area aid a special visit to the North Wales Police Airbase in Rhuddlan last week to learn about the work of the helicopter.

Youngsters and councillors from Rhos had the opportunity of meeting some of the officers and seeing the force helicopter up close and personal.

Organised by Police Community Support Officer Sofia Iftikar and Council Clerk Wendy Owens, the youngsters, who are all members of the Rhos Youth Council, spoke to some of the officers based at the Unit as well being given the opportunity to see the police dogs being trained.

“I arranged the day because it was something they all expressed and interest in,” said PCSO Iftikar.

“Unfortunately, shortly after we arrived at the airbase, the helicopter was called to an incident, but luckily for us, some of the police dogs were in training, so the youngsters got the opportunity to see them being put through their paces.

“Hopefully they all enjoyed seeing the airbase and speaking to some of the officers and enjoyed learning about the work of the emergency services.”

Community safety twilight burglary campaign in full swing

The Community Safety Partnership is proactively working on their Autumn Burglary Campaign.

Operation Twilight has been running in the County during the last few weeks and the main aim is to prevent and reduce incidents of Burglary in the County Borough. It is a fact that every year as the evenings draw in and the clocks are turned back there is an increase in the number of burglaries. This is a national trend which is also mirrored in Wrexham.

Operation Twilight aims to encourage residents to keep their homes safe and secure during the winter and promotes a simple message:

"Any one at Home ?...Protect your homes this Winter"

This message has been widely promoted across the County Borough during recent weeks using a range of different methods. Partners in the press have been assisting the Partnership by running articles on the Campaign, Heart FM are currently running and advertising campaign on the radio which encourages residents to be vigilant and leave a light on and also an advertisement van has been touring communities across the County promoting the message.

Throughout the campaign period members of the Community Safety Partnership have been conducting presentations at various foras including the Police and Community Forum which took place on Thursday 15 October 2009. At this event the public were urged to work with the Community Safety Partnership to help ensure that burglary does not occur in Wrexham County Borough. Alun Evans Community Beat Sergeant at Wrexham Town offered practical advice and guidance to the forum on how to keep their homes safe. He explained that many burglaries are crimes of opportunity and a burglar only needs to spot a house in darkness, an open window or an unlocked door or gate to make their move.

Lisa Surridge District Inspector at Wrexham South explained: Operation Twilight is an excellent example of Partnership work at its very best. This joint approach has enabled us to promote a very important message to residents in the County Borough during recent weeks.
