Swansea ladies to follow in Tiger's footsteps

Two local ladies have found their tiger feet on the golf course.

Viv Rees and Angela Airey are set to follow in the footsteps of world number one Tiger Woods by taking part in a prestigious UK golf event later this month.

Viv and Angela, who work for Swansea Council and the Lloyds Banking Group respectively, will be heading off to the world famous St Andrews Golf Course in Scotland to take part in the Peugeot LGU Coronation Foursomes.

The event is open to women members of affiliated golf clubs in Great Britain and Ireland and more than 34,000 competitors from 1,300 clubs across the country entered.

Gower Golf Club members Viv and Angela won an area final at Clyne Golf Course recently to secure their place in a 15-strong pairs field of amateur lady golfers from around the UK.

The winners of the tournament at St Andrews will play in the 2010 Pro-Am Ricoh Women's British Open at Royal Birkdale.

Viv and Angela have had previous success by reaching the West Wales Jubilee Foursomes Final in 2005 and in reaching the seventh round of the National Daily Mail Foursomes event in 2007 where they narrowly missed out on the final for the last 16 at the Forest of Arden.

Viv said: "We are over the moon to have reached the final. It's already a big achievement for us to have got this far, especially when there are so many golfers entering the tournament.

"St Andrews is such a famous course and one that has been the venue for world class golf tournaments in years gone by. It will be really exciting to follow in the footsteps of so many famous golfers. We can't wait!"

The Peugeot LGU Coronation Foursomes takes place at St Andrews on Monday September 21.
