Domestic Abuse: How to get help

Victims of domestic abuse and those concerned with the issue can now access information and guidance at the click of a button.

An online guide has been launched on the North Wales Police website which is specifically focused to providing help, advice and support to victims of domestic abuse.

In addition to providing information about what domestic abuse is and how to recognise it, it also gives people valuable contact numbers where they can seek help and advice.

Temporary Deputy Chief Constable, Ian Shannon said: “Domestic abuse is a priority for North Wales Police and we are delighted to be able to provide this information on our website.

“Domestic abuse is unacceptable and affects not only the victim, but those around them too.

“North Wales Police will act positively to deal thoroughly, sensitively and robustly with all reports of domestic abuse.

“I actively encourage people who are victims of this crime to report it and seek help and advice.”

A general definition of domestic abuse is any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between adults, who are, or have been in, an intimate relationship, or between other adult family members. It includes heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender relationships, and extended families.

This abuse can be emotional, physical, sexual, psychological or economic and victims can be subjected to any or all of these regardless of age, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, disability, lifestyle or class.

Information on the website includes advice on what to do if an argument starts, if you are planning to leave an abusive relationship as well as advice for male victims of domestic abuse and children who witness domestic abuse.

North Wales Police recognise and embrace the diversity of the community and, in order to make this important information accessible to all members of the community, contact numbers have not only been provided in Welsh and English but also in Polish, Cantonese, Urdu, Bengali, Russian and Turkish.
