The Union of Welsh Indpendent Chapels has asked Eisteddfod authorities to think again about selling drink at their youth event and called for action on alcohol abuse in Wales.
A press statement issued at the Eisteddfod in Bala, says: "We respectfully ask Urdd Gobaith Cymru to change its mind about allowing alcohol to be sold on its Eisteddfod field in future. At a time when alcohol is a particularly serious problem among so many 11-15 year-olds in Wales (worse than in any other country in Europe) we believe that providing alcohol at the children and young people’s Eisteddfod is totally irresponsible."
Speaking as well for the Presbyterian Church of Wales and the Baptist Union of Wales the Union has also called for, a stop to supermarket booze bargains; a minimum price of 50p per unit of alcohol and support for the campaign by the Welsh Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs for a ban on alcohol ads.
