Church schools back community access campaign

Church schools in South West Wales are ready to back the Sports Council for Wales’ campaign to open up school sports facilities to their local communities.

Education chiefs in the St Davids diocese have pledged to support schools that opt to take part in the SCW’s drive to boost physical activity and fitness levels.

“It’s something which we would leave to individual schools to consider”, said an Education Team spokesman. “But where they decided to become involved, we would support them.”

The campaign was launched last week by the Sports Council and endorsed by Wales’ Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones and Education Minister Jane Hutt.

St Davids Diocese has 35 voluntary-aided and voluntary-controlled church schools in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire.

Next week’s (September 16-17) meeting of the Governing Body of the Church In Wales in Lampeter will debate the findings and recommendations of an in-depth education review that will lead to a new five-year plan for church schools throughout Wales.
