A striking new £3.2 million footbridge providing improved community links in Newbridge town centre is to open next week and the structure has been named in honour of two local sporting legends.
Joe and Enzo Calzaghe will open the landmark Calzaghe Bridge, located in the heart of Newbridge town centre, on Wednesday 9th September at 11.30am.
The undefeated former world boxing champion and his award winning trainer father will attend a special opening event along with the Deputy First Minister and Minister for the Economy and Transport, Ieuan Wyn Jones, and other special guests.
The bridge will improve pedestrian links between isolated elements of the community and town centre, providing accessibility to job opportunities, retail, leisure, cultural and educational services and facilities. It forms part of the wider Newbridge Safe Routes in Communities scheme, a £1.4 million project funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, Caerphilly County Borough Council and Newbridge Partnership.
The community are expected to turn out in force to mark the occasion when Joe and Enzo officially open the bridge at 12.00noon.
The project is a true partnership success story and improves sustainable access for pedestrians, cyclists and people with disabilities. The bridge was designed and project managed by Caerphilly County Borough Council's Joint Venture partner Capita Symonds.
