Lord-Lieutenants seek guests for the Royal national memorial service

As 2009 draws to a close, so the sad departure of Harry Patch, the last serving soldier from the First World War, reminds us that whilst time does not stand still, we do need to reflect on how our freedom has been won and in the succeeding years maintained.

In doing so, a unique opportunity of marking this has arisen. Her Majesty the Queen has decided that a distinctive way of keeping the 11th day of the 11th month relevant and contemporary is to make the links with the generations that followed. She has asked each of her Lord-Lieutenants to select people from their counties who have a distinct or special connection to those who served in the First World War to be invited to attend a national memorial service on Wednesday, 11 November 2009 in Westminster Abbey where it is anticipated that Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will attend. This prestigious event will also be attended by public figures and broadcast live on BBC One.

Lord-Lieutenant for Gwent, Mr.Simon Boyle is asking through the local press for individuals who would like to attend to apply in writing stating why they think they should be invited to attend the service.

He has a very small allocation so a ballot will be conducted if need be. The successful applicants will be able to be accompanied by a spouse, partner, friend or carer.

Those applying can be people of any age and walk of life but they must have some relation or connection to those who saw service in the First World War. He is looking to find people with the most appropriate links with the War.
