Three RNLI lifeguards, Jon Johnston, Coral Lewis and Adam Pitman, have been awarded the Humanitarian Award from the Surf Lifesaving Association (SLSA) of Wales, after their efforts in a rescue at Tenby in July.
The charity’s lifeguards assisted 36 children and 4 adults off Tenby South beach after they got into difficulty on a sandbank. The award was presented by Peter Lake, President of the Surf Lifesaving Association of Wales at Tenby South beach on Thursday (3 September).
RNLI Lifeguard Coral Lewis, comments:
‘We are thrilled to receive this award from such a well-regarded Welsh lifesaving body. We have come to the end of a very busy season and this recognition is much appreciated.’
Peter Lake, President of Surf Lifesaving Association of Wales, comments:
‘SLSA Wales is a voluntary lifesaving charitable organisation who believes in working and developing both lifesaving and sporting activities in the local communities.
‘On behalf of SLSA Wales, I would like to congratulate these three lifeguards on their professionalism in this rescue. The RNLI is a fantastic charity and we look forward to seeing the lifeguards return to the beaches of Wales again next year.’
Chris Rigby, RNLI Area Lifeguard Supervisor, adds:
‘We work closely with our lifeboat crews, Pembrokeshire Council and the local surf lifesaving clubs and have had a fairly eventful season. It is great to see the lifeguards receiving an award from a large and respected organisation within our industry.’
The RNLI lifeguards will finish their patrols this Sunday (6 September) and are due to return to patrol the county’s beaches next summer.
