Weekend chance to fly the UK footbike flag

People in Swansea who like to keep fit could get the chance to represent their country this weekend in a unique two-wheeled event taking place in the city.

The UK leg of the 2009 Footbike Eurocup is once again taking place in Swansea and organisers are hoping that keen sportspeople in the city will join in the fun and become one of the official UK team members.

The Swansea leg of the competition is one of four held in Europe with the others taking place in Germany, Italy and the Czech Republic.

A series of events for men and women is held over two days around a specially designed course in Singleton Park on Saturday September 26 and along Swansea promenade prior to the Admiral Swansea Bay 10k on Sunday September 27.

Teams from around Europe will be competing for the top places in each event with trophies for the winners and certificates for all.

Rob Wachowski, Swansea Council's Cycling and Walking Officer, helped bring the unique event to
Swansea and also designed the course.

He said: "The Eurocup has been held in Swansea for the last couple of years and has been a great success.

"Swansea has become a regular fixture in the competition. We've had the luxury of making the most of a fantastic location and the competitors who visit from Europe always say how lovely Swansea is.

"We'd like more people to enter as part of the UK team. While the rest of Europe seems to have got to grips with the concept of the footbike, we've been a little slower. I use one regularly as well as a conventional bike and it's great fun.

"Anyone who wants to enter this year's competition can call me to find out more details."

Registration for the event takes place on Saturday 26 September at 11am next to the Swiss Cottage in Singleton Park.
