Prizes galore at RCT County Show

Prize-winning flowers, crafts, fruit and veg and wines produced by local people – and some from further afield – delighted visitors to the Rhondda Cynon Taf County Show (Sunday, August 30, 2009).

People of all ages went along to Rhondda Sports Centre, Ystrad, to view entries in more than 140 gardening and craft competition categories. First, second and third prizes cash prizes totalling more than £2,000 were awarded in all 140 categories

These included open veg, open flower, roses, chrysanthemums, floral art, open culinary, home-made wine and photography. There were special children’s sections, with prizes in a number of categories including best hand-drawn picture and best animal made from recyclable materials.

There was also a special award - the Mayor’s Choice Award - presented by Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Mayor Cllr Robert Smith to David Jenkins of Cowbridge for the wooden clock he had created.

Cllr Smith said: “The County Show is well-established, attracting entrants from neighbouring counties and from as far afield as Somerset. It was wonderful to see all the items on display - well done to everyone who took part.”

The Welsh National Dahlia Show was also hosted during the weekend, and there was a craft fayre. Visitors to the free event also had a chance to see chef Geoff Tookey serving up some recipes.
