Ysgol Hen Felin young consumers are top of the class

Students from Ysgol Hen Felin were flying the Welsh flag after reaching the national finals of a fun and important competition.

The Ystrad school is a keen participant in the Young Consumer Challenge, which offers an innovative way to teach and inform young people about their rights, road safety, health and safety, bank accounts, food hygiene and more.

It is hoped that the fun, engaging way information is presented via the quiz allows young people to be more aware and able to stand up for, and protect their rights as consumers.

Ysgol Hen Felin was the only Welsh school to attend the finals of the Special Educational Needs version of the challenge, which was held in Brighton.

They managed to attain national success thanks to the support of their school and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Trading Standards officers, who are keen advocates of the competition and run their own RCT-wide version every year to educate and empower young people.

Students Daniel Hitchman, James Prestwood, Cassie Richards, Terri-Ann Thomas, who are all post-16, represented the school in Brighton.

Following their return, they met with Mayor Cllr Robert Smith and his consort, Margaret, in the newly-refurbished Mayor’s Parlour at the Municipal Buildings, to be congratulated.

They were treated to a tour of the parlour by the county’s First Citizen and warmly congratulated for their success and for being such a credit to their school, county and families.

Mayor Cllr Smith said: “I am so proud of the achievements of these four students and hope they had a wonderful experience in Brighton with their colleagues from schools all over the UK.

“They have done us proud and it was a pleasure to meet them and congratulate them on their national success.”

Tim Leyshon, Acting Head of Ysgol Hen Felin, said “we are justifiably proud of Mr Darryn Walker and pupils and very grateful to Mrs Jane Godier for facilitating this exiting experience.”
