Time- Travellers: a Journey Through the 20th Century with the National Youth Theatre of Wales

The sixty young members of the National Youth Theatre of Wales 2009 are currently in-residence in Aberystwyth - working between the University and the Arts Centre - to create, rehearse and launch their 2009 production, Canrif / Century, before touring to Clwyd Theatr Cymru in Mold and Sherman Cymru, Cardiff.

This specially-commissioned, new play by Manon Eames - directed by NYTW Artistic Director, Tim Baker - draws upon Wales' recent historical heritage to take actors and audiences on an inventive, break-neck journey via some of the crucial events of the last hundred years.

Incorporating live-action, and archive and documentary materials, Canrif / Century, presents scenes that are rooted in Wales' industrial past, scenes that reflect on two world wars, and scenes that reveal the struggle to achieve the right to vote - all this shot-through with humanity and a healthy dose of humour.

"Manon's intricate perception of the importance of global events, together with events more-closely related to Wales, has resulted in a fascinating and challenging evocation of protest and change throughout the 20th Century," commented Tim Baker, NYTW Artistic Director

With support from a specially-selected, professional artistic team, forty-five of the Youth Theatre members are developing their acting, movement and singing skills, whilst fifteen members are focussing upon their design and production skills. Together as one team they are generating an ambitious, large-scale production that, in true NYTW tradition, will enlighten and entertain its audiences.

"The dedication and enthusiasm of our young people is second to none; they rise to every challenge we put before them, and contribute amazing energy and enthusiasm to every task. They're committed to producing a wonderful piece of theatre that I'm sure audiences will find moving, thought-provoking and inspiring" added Pauline Crossley, National Youth Arts Wales Manager.
