The popular press has been having a field day with the news that 'Spotted Dick' has been renamed ‘spotted Richard’ or ‘sultana sponge’ by canteen staff in Flintshire.
Even the BBC's Radio 4 ran the story. It would appear however that the decision was taken by the canteen staff and was not a directive from upon high.
A spokesman for Flintshire County Council said: 'The correct title for this dish is Spotted Dick. However, because of several immature comments from a few customers, catering staff renamed the dish Spotted Richard or Sultana Sponge.
'This was not a policy decision, canteen staff simply acted as they thought best to put an end to unwelcome and childish comments, albeit from a very small number of customers.'
Expect the red tops to run with this for months claiming that the dish has been renamed by the 'loony left' or even by order of the European Parliament.
