Public invited to view Bersham Conservation Area Proposals

The Conservation Character Assessment and Management Plan for Bersham Conservation Area will be displayed at the Committee Room, Parish Hall, Vicarage Hill, Rhostyllen, between 2 pm and 6 pm on Monday 9th November.

The Plan, which is currently in draft form, has been prepared by Wrexham Council's Planning Department and it seeks to ensure that the special character and appearance of the Conservation Area is preserved or enhanced for future generations.

The document is divided into two parts; a Character Assessment which provides historical background and defines the qualities that make up the special character and appearance of the Conservation Area; and a Management Plan which sets out proposals for the preservation and enhancement of the area and design guidance for alterations to existing properties and new construction.

The Conservation Area is located within the wooded part of the upper reaches of the Clywedog valley, which runs from Minera to Wrexham. The special character of the Conservation Area has been greatly influenced by the valley landscape setting and the historical and architectural association with John Wilkinson’s ironworks and the Plas Power Estate. The remains of Wilkinson’s Ironworks are an important link with the area’s nationally significant industrial past. The old blast furnace and the octagonal foundry, are both particular landmark buildings.

In contrast the distinctive “Estate architecture” style; sandstone walling, slate roofing, heavy cast iron latticed windows and carved decorative barge-boards are all characteristic of the influence of the Plas Power Estate.

Members of the public are invited to attend and leave their comments or ask questions of a Planning Officer who will be available on the day.

After the event the proposals will then be on display in the reception area, Wrexham County Borough Council, Lambpit Street Offices, Wrexham between 10th November and 13th November.

Comments on the document and proposals should be submitted to the Chief Planning Officer before 16th November 2009.
