Denbighshire County Council is to publish a statutory notice regarding the proposed closure of Ysgol Llantysilio for September 2010.
In July 2009, the Cabinet approved plans for the council to commence formal consultation on the potential closure of the school. The school’s governing body has also come to the view that the school is no longer viable.
Currently the school has 10 full time pupils. However, this term there are no pupils within Key Stage 1 of the school and by September 2010 there is forecast to be only three full time pupils.
Following the consultation, officers from Lifelong Learning have considered the issues raised and have concluded that proceeding with the publication of the statutory notice to close the school would be in the best educational interest of the children who live in the area currently served by Ysgol Llantysilio.
Once the statutory notice is published next month, anyone with objections will have two months to submit any written objections,. The authority will then be required within one month of the close of the objection consultation period to submit details of the objections and the authority’s response to the Welsh Assembly Government.
If objections are received, the Welsh Assembly Government will either approve, modify or reject the proposals. If no objections are received, the council will make the decision.
Leader, Councillor Hugh Evans, who is also the Cabinet Lead Member for Lifelong Learning, said: “We have consulted widely on the proposal, with letters going out far and wide, including town and community councils, AMs and MPs and other educational bodies. Meetings were also held in the local community and with governors and teachers. It was vitally important that local people were kept informed of the proposals and had plenty of opportunity to have their say.
“We will now wait to see whether any further comments are received as part of the latest consultation before the final decision is made.”
