Education Minister’s official Christmas card competition

The Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning & Skills has invited school children in Wales to design her official Christmas card.

It has become a tradition over the past few years to hold a competition amongst school children in Wales to design the Education Minister’s official Christmas card.

Because this year marks the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) pupils are asked to consider diversity and equality in their designs. These are core values of the UNCRC.

The Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning & Skills will select the winning entry as their official Christmas card this year.

The winner will be invited to the Senedd to meet the Minister and will receive a signed framed copy of their entry. A selection of designs will also be put on display at the Welsh Assembly Government Office in Cathays Park.

The closing date for the competition is Friday 23 October.

Further information on the UNCRC can be found at Clic Online the national information and advice service for young people in Wales.

Christmas card competition entry rules

  • the competition is open to all pupils aged 14 to 16 years in Wales;
  • all entries should be A4 portrait in size;
  • all entries should be ‘flat’, i.e. not too many uneven surfaces, as this makes scanning artwork for printing difficult;
  • use of materials. These should be bright, vibrant colours reproduced well, but too much glitter and cotton wool can again cause problems with scanning of artwork and printing so this should be avoided;
  • white or light coloured paper or card is best. Dark backgrounds can cause problems with printing;
  • any text on the artwork should be bilingual, with Welsh first followed by English;
  • please include the pupil’s name, age, class and school on the back of their entry;
  • please note that unfortunately we will not be able to return any entries;
  • closing date for the competition is Friday 23 October.

Please send your entries to:
