Open up a world of learning

Storytelling, pottery, dance, an under 5s corner and special FX makeup; just some of the activities available at Cardiff Council’s biggest ever Family Learning Day.

This year’s event, at the National Museum of Wales on Saturday October 10, will also feature Science Made Simple. The group, which has just returned from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, aims to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. Their unique brand of learning is tailor-made for everyone to enjoy and has featured regularly on TV and radio.

Learning together as a family has been proven to improve a child’s development and achievement levels. By doing activities together families can help children get more out of school, from better grades to scoring more goals, while adults can gain confidence in their own ability to learn . Learning together as a family also improves motivation and self-esteem in both children and adults.

While the annual free day is a celebration of all the benefits of families learning together, it is also an opportunity to showcase the opportunities available at a variety of community venues across the city.

Executive Member for Schools and Lifelong Learning Councillor Freda Salway said: “Cardiff has a wealth of opportunities for community learning and gaining knowledge together as a family is an integral part of what we offer. The benefits are huge in number and it’s always very heartening to see the fun people of all ages can have when they’re learning new skills together.”

The number and range of adult courses on offer in Cardiff continues to grow and the list includes everything from creative writing, website design and first aid to languages, psychology and life coaching.

Course costs vary depending on duration, help is available and some learners will be eligible for reduced fees. Help in finding the right course for you and details of everything on offer are now available at www.cardiff.gov.uk/learn or on 029 2087 2847.
