Plans for 20mph speed limits outside schools

A 20mph speed limit could be introduced outside 10 more schools in the county borough under new plans agreed by Wrexham Council.

The authority has already implemented 20mph speed limits outside 18 schools in the county borough, including Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, Rhosymedre CP and Ysgol I D Hooson. The scheme has proved a success, as well as making it safer for children to cross the road; it has also helped improve traffic flow in a number of areas.

There are now plans to expand the scheme to a further in the Wrexham area.

The ten schools are:
  • Eyton Controlled
  • Ysgol Rhiwabon
  • Johnstown Junior
  • Ysgol Penrhyn, New Broughton
  • Park CP, Llay
  • St Mary's RCP
  • Borras Schools
  • Ysgol Heulfan, Gwersyllt
  • Ysgol Clywedog
  • Wat's Dyke CP
Two other schools, Bwlchgwyn CP and Rhosnesni High have also been awarded funding under a Transport Grant and the Safe Routes in the Community schemes that will help improve road safety in the local community.

The implementation of the speed limit zones will be open for consultation with the schools and local communities and is subject to a number of different criteria. Research will take into and consider the number of accidents in the area over a certain period, plus the traffic composition and flow. Other criteria include average traffic speeds in the vicinity of the school and the maximum number of pupils that can be accommodated by each school.

David Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport said:

“The introduction of 20mph speed limits is already providing children with a safer route to school. In some of the areas where they have been introduced it has also improved the flow of traffic. We support introducing the scheme to the ten other schools in Wrexham and the authority will be encouraging responses that include and encompass a wide variety of different views from the communities concerned during the consultation period."
