New Cadets welcomed to the force

North Wales Police’s Volunteer Cadet Programme is underway with the second phase of recruits being welcomed to the force last week.

Over a 100 new Cadets have been recruited and they will now embark on a two-year training and development programme and will be based across the force area.

This is the second programme that North Wales Police have delivered and follows on from the success of the pilot programme which began in 2007.

“This is a unique opportunity for young people across North Wales and I welcome the new cadets on board,” said Force Cadet Co-ordinator, Sergeant Melanie Brace.

“The intention of the programme is to train young people to become positive and active citizens through partnership with local communities. It will also allow the police to utilize the cadets at non-confrontational events and police initiatives, whilst they in turn obtain a valuable insight into a police related career as well as gain unique social skills and perspectives.

She added: “We will thoroughly support and nurture the cadets through the programme to ensure they have the most positive and rewarding experience.”

Acting Chief Constable Ian Shannon said: “I am absolutely delighted to be able to welcome the Cadets into the wider North Wales Police family and I look forward to watching their progress in the months and years to come.”

  • The pilot scheme started in June 2007, when 60 young people from across North Wales embarked on the two year training and development programme.
  • The Cadets will attend their local station one evening per week to take part in sessions such as basic police law, and team building skills. There will be also be guest speakers, drill and visits to various departments
  • During holidays and weekends they will take part in crime prevention initiatives, police training events, community projects, test purchasing and events such as Remembrance Day.
